RESPONSIBLE MINING

Responsible Mining defines how we do business at Barrick. As a leader in the mining industry, we have a responsibility to protect the environment, to conduct our business based on the highest ethical standards, and to contribute to the welfare of the communities and countries in which we operate. This global commitment makes us stronger and more successful as a company.

Dow Jones Sustainability Index 2009/10In 2009, Barrick was named to the Dow Jones Sustainability Index World category for the second time, ranking the company among the most sustainability-driven and socially responsible companies in the world.

Barrick has its own Corporate Social Responsibility Charter, which sets out our commitment to the environment, employee health and safety, business ethics and community development.

Wherever we operate, we work closely with communities, governments and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to make a positive difference and help communities prosper.  We believe that Barrick’s business objectives and sustainable development go hand in hand. Our aim is to share the benefits of mining with our employees and the community and contribute to economic and social development.  Our partners include such respected organizations as World Vision, CARE International, the Cisneros Foundation, the African Medical & Research Foundation (AMREF),  the Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, the Clinton Giustra Sustainable Growth Initiative, Conservation International, the Nature Conservancy and others.

Building Healthier Communities

Globally, Barrick is committed to building healthier communities. For example, in areas of South America, Tanzania and Papua New Guinea, preventing the spread of diseases and improving access to health services and clean water are a focus of our community programs. In Tanzania, Barrick has well-established health facilities and programs in place to combat HIV/AIDS and malaria. We work with AMREF and the community to raise awareness and encourage people to get tested and seek treatment. In rural Peru, Barrick’s $2.3 million program with World Vision is taking direct aim at child malnutrition and helping families to overcome the cycle of poverty.

Dismantling Barriers to Education

Barrick's partnership with CARE International Tanzania has doubled high school enrollment in the Kahama District.Barrick recognizes that an educated population is vital to emerging economies in the 21st century. We make significant investments in education facilities, including school construction and teaching resources, student scholarships and skills training programs. In Tanzania, the company’s six-year $2 million education program with CARE International Tanzania has resulted in doubling the high school enrolment in the Kahama District, the construction of a new secondary school, and a better quality of education for thousands of children and youth living near our Bulyanhulu mine.

Barrick's commitment to clean energy includes the highest-altitude wind turbine in the world at the Veladero mine in Argentina.

Environmental Responsibility

Barrick’s environmental management systems at our mine sites are world class. To reduce our carbon footprint, we have introduced a global climate change program and undertaken several renewable energy projects. These include the construction of a $70 million, 36-megawatt wind farm in Chile, the world’s highest-altitude wind turbine in Argentina, and a $10 million solar power installation in Nevada.

Economic Contribution

Barrick projects bring employment opportunities to the areas around mine sites, which are typically in isolated areas. These communities benefit from salaries, capital expenditures, the purchase of local goods and services, and payment of taxes and royalties.

Barrick is making a very significant contribution to the economies of developing countries where we operate, much of which benefits local people. We support the development of local small businesses and potential suppliers to our mines. As a result of our “Buy Local First” policy, Barrick spent almost a half a billion dollars on goods and services purchased from local businesses in developing countries in 2007.

At Barrick, we are proud of our commitment to Responsible Mining and are continually striving to improve our performance, applying lessons learned from around the globe.

Read more about our approach and numerous other initiatives underway. Barrick publishes a quarterly Responsible Mining report, Beyond Borders, which features the latest news and information, and an annual Responsibility Report on our performance.
