Barrick recognizes its responsibility extends beyond mine closure to encompass a larger responsibility to the local community. At a very early stage in the life of a mine we address the potential post-closure impact on local communities. Barrick clearly has a role to play in contributing to the long term sustainability of the communities surrounding our mines. Planning in collaboration with the local authorities is, therefore, essential. Most closure planning and activities take place during development and operations and focus on promoting local entrepreneurship. We support skills development and work in close collaboration with local economic diversification program.
Mine sites will complete a Closure Social Impact Assessment (CSIA), targeted for three years prior to closure of any operation. While appropriate planning of sustainable community projects support the long term sustainability of nearby communities, CSIAs will focus on the net positive benefits from the operation and identify alternative uses for the skills and infrastructure that have been developed during operations.
Closure planning also includes employee assistance to identify new career opportunities as appropriate. Where possible, our goal is to offer continuing employment opportunities at other Barrick operations. We also offer out-placement services for employees who are not able to relocate.
