Attracting and Retaining Employees

Education and Skills Development

We work with our employees to help them fulfill their potential, by providing opportunities for career advancement and skills development. Skill development programs are often available on site, and tuition reimbursement is often provided for off-site, employment-related education. Also many Barrick employees are part of our Global Succession Planning Program, which provides employees with a chance to increase their knowledge and skills by transferring them into assignments of greater complexity at other Barrick sites, which may include sites in other countries.

Over the past few years, the African Region has invested in long term education by sending a number of employees to Australia and South Africa to study mining engineering and metallurgy. Other Tanzanians have spent time abroad at other Barrick operations in order to strengthen their professional skills. The Company has also embarked on partnerships with Tanzanian-based educational institutions with the objective of improving the technical educational delivery. Tanzanian university students are offered vocational work assignments at our mines in Tanzania with the aim of developing their practical knowledge in their individual fields of study.

Salaries and Benefits

Barrick conducts business in many countries and generally provides wages and benefits relative to regional economics. We exceed average wages in the countries where we operate. Men and women employed in the same job category receive the same remuneration, according to their level of experience and length of employment. Benefits provided are in line with cultural sensitivities and include a core group of health care benefits at all operations, as well as non-core regional benefits. Non-core benefits are partially determined by local competitive practices and needs, and may include superannuation and other retirement programs, maternity or parental leave and employee assistance programs. Please see the table below for wage comparisons in significant regions.

Personal development opportunities are an important employee benefit. Skill development programs are often available on site for our employees. In some cases tuition reimbursement is provided for off-site training, which can include college or university programs. The Company also supports the educational development of employee’s children, and often other children in the communities near our operations as well. We provide student scholarships and support for education facilities - including school construction and donations of school furnishings and supplies - for thousands of children each year.
