The partnership helped the state secure the National Science Foundation's Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL) at the now closed Homestake mine in Lead, SD, donated by Barrick. At depths of 8,000 feet, the site provides an ideal underground environment for scientific research, including experiments that require shielding from cosmic rays.
