Barrick recognizes the need for an effective security program to protect people, products, assets and reputation. The protection of people is first and foremost. The company produces a precious commodity – gold – and its mine sites house valuable plant, equipment, vehicles, commodities and materials that must be safeguarded.
Barrick conducts exploration and operates mines in various countries around the world. While the security challenges may vary by location, Barrick’s Security Policy applies to all locations worldwide.
Barrick’s Security approach is described in the Barrick Security Management System. It outlines six elements:
- Security Risk Assessment Process and Reviews: Thorough and regular reviews of each location identify risks and ensure that suitable security controls are in place.
- Information Gathering and Analysis: Ongoing analysis of data provides the company with a basis for continuous improvement of security approaches and processes.
- Alignment with International Norms: Barrick follows the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights, a set of principles to guide companies in maintaining the safety and security of their operations within an operating framework that ensures respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. The Voluntary Principles were developed by a group of governments, businesses, and non-governmental organizations for use by companies in the extractive and energy sectors. Some of Barrick's mines are located in developing nations, where the rule of law is not always well established and where the cultural, economic and political environment is complex. Barrick provides special human rights training for security personnel, and they must comply with the Voluntary Principles. Barrick sites work closely with local community groups to build good relationships. Barrick also works cooperatively with local authorities and observes local laws and regulations.
- Control Frameworks: Standards, procedures and guidelines are developed to manage security risks. These control procedures deliver a systematic and consistent approach to security risk management. Barrick has developed robust, world-class standards and guidelines for asset protection that must be in place at each site.
- Critical Incident Management: Barrick has plans in place to respond to critical incidents such as fraud, robbery, incursion, bomb threats, or other serious threats.
- Investigations: All incidents are investigated, and investigations are conducted in compliance with the laws and regulations of the host jurisdiction.
Barrick's Security team includes functional experts in physical security, electronics, crime investigation, training, gold security, and other aspects. Barrick is committed to best practice approaches, employing highly trained professionals, recognized global standards, and appropriate technologies.
