North America

North America is Barrick’s largest producing region and is comprised of nine operating mines: Goldstrike, Round Mountain, Bald Mountain, Cortez, Turquoise Ridge, Golden Sunlight, Ruby Hill and Marigold mine in the U.S., and Hemlo in Canada. The North American region has 50.6 million ounces of proven and probable gold reserves1, which represents 37% of the Company's total reserves. The region produced ~ 3 million ounces of gold in 2008, or 40% of total production, at total cash costs of $493 per ounce2.

The region has two advanced projects currently in construction: the Cortez Hills expansion project in Nevada and the Pueblo Viejo joint-venture (60%) in the Dominican Republic. The feasibility study update of the Donlin Creek project in Alaska has been completed and approved by the Board of the Donlin Creek LLC. Further optimization work and pre-permitting activities are underway.
