North America

The North America region consists of Goldstrike, Round Mountain, Bald Mountain, Cortez, Turquoise Ridge, Golden Sunlight, Ruby Hill and Marigold in the U.S., and Hemlo in Canada. The region also has one advanced project currently under construction — the Pueblo Viejo joint-venture (60%) project in the Dominican Republic — in addition to Donlin Gold, a large, undeveloped gold deposit in Alaska.

North America is Barrick’s largest producing region with production of 3.1 million ounces of gold in 2010, or 41% of total production, at total cash costs of $489 per ounce1. The region has 56.8 million ounces of proven and probable gold reserves2, representing 41% of the Company's total reserves. In 2011, gold production is expected to be in the range of 3.30-3.40 million ounces at total cash costs of $425-$450 per ounce1.

Gold discoveries in Nevada

In September 2011, we reported two significant gold discoveries, Red Hill and Goldrush, on our 100%-owned Cortez property in Nevada. Since then, our confidence in the potential and continuity of the mineralization has increased.  In addition, in-fill drilling between both deposits is successfully finding new mineralization and there is the possibility that the two deposits will merge into a single deposit.  A total of 264,000 feet of drilling is planned at Red Hill and Goldrush in 2011. These two discoveries highlight opportunities that we have created through our exploration program and demonstrate our long-term commitment to exploration3.
