John L. Thornton
Chairman of the board

John Thornton

John L. Thornton was appointed Chairman of Barrick Gold Corporation on April 30, 2014.

Mr. Thornton has extensive experience in business, finance and public affairs. He has served on the boards of international public companies including China Unicom, Ford Motor Company, HSBC, Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, Intel and News Corporation. Mr. Thornton retired as President of Goldman Sachs in 2003, and is currently a Professor and Director of the Global Leadership Program at the Tsinghua University School of Economics and Management in Beijing. He is also Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C.

As Chairman of Barrick, Mr. Thornton continues the tradition established by the company’s Founder Peter Munk, with a focus on strategic vision, strong financial management, entrepreneurial spirit and a deep commitment to operational excellence.


Kelvin Dushnisky

Kelvin Dushnisky

Kelvin Dushnisky was appointed Co-President of Barrick in July 2014 and shares overall responsibility for execution of the company’s strategic priorities and operating plans. He was previously Senior Executive Vice President with global responsibility for Government Relations, Permitting, Corporate Responsibility and Communications. In February 2013, Mr. Dushnisky was named Chairman of the Board of Directors of London-listed African Barrick Gold plc (Now Acacia Mining plc).

Mr. Dushnisky joined Barrick in April 2002, with extensive international experience in project approvals, development agreements and public affairs. Prior to Barrick, Mr. Dushnisky served as Vice Chairman, General Counsel and a founding Director of EuroZinc Mining Corporation, Vice President of Sutton Resources Ltd. (acquired by Barrick) and Vice President of Rescan Consultants Inc. He has served on the boards of directors for a number of publicly listed companies.

Mr. Dushnisky holds a B.Sc. (Hon.) degree from the University of Manitoba and M.Sc. and J.D. degrees from the University of British Columbia. He is a member of the Law Society of British Columbia, the Canadian Bar Association, the Canadian Council of Chief Executives, the Institute of the Americas, the Canadian Council of the Americas (Vice-Chair) and the Canadian Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Dushnisky also represents Barrick at the World Gold Council and the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM). He served on the National Advisory Council for a series of roundtables evaluating Canada’s role in emerging markets.


James (Jim) Gowans

Jim Gowans

Jim Gowans, a seasoned mining operator with four decades of industry experience, was appointed Co-President of Barrick in July 2014. He joined Barrick in January 2014 as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. As Co-President, Mr. Gowans shares overall responsibility for execution of the company’s strategic priorities and operating plans.

Mr. Gowans was previously Managing Director of Debswana, a joint venture between the Government of Botswana and De Beers SA. Before that, he was Chief Operating Officer of DeBeers SA, and Chief Executive Officer of DeBeers Canada. Mr. Gowans also has significant experience in the gold sector, having worked for eight years at Placer Dome, culminating in his role as Executive Vice President, Canadian Operations. He also held senior operating positions at PT Inco, where he was Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, and at Cominco (now Teck Resources Ltd), where he held the positions of Operations Manager for Potash Operations and General Manager of the Red Dog zinc mine.

Mr. Gowans is a professional engineer with a Bachelor of Applied Science in Mineral Engineering from the University of British Columbia.


Shaun Usmar
Senior Executive Vice President & Chief Financial Officer

Shaun Usmar

Shaun Usmar joined Barrick in November 2014 as Senior Executive Vice President and became Chief Financial Officer in February 2015. He is an international mining executive with extensive experience in financial management and reporting, transactions, business integration, strategy development, restructuring and turnarounds.

Mr. Usmar joined Xstrata in 2002 as a founding member of the leadership team that grew the company into one of the world’s largest diversified miners at the time of its acquisition by Glencore in 2013. He was Chief Financial Officer of Xstrata Nickel from 2006-2013, a business encompassing exploration, mining, smelting and refining activities on five continents. He also served as Chief Financial Officer of Xstrata Alloys in South Africa, the world’s largest ferro-chrome producer, and General Manager of Business Development for Xstrata plc in London. Prior to joining Xstrata, Mr. Usmar worked in Finance and Business Development roles at BHP Billiton.

Mr. Usmar has a Bachelor of Science in Metallurgy and Materials from the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa, and a MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.


Kevin Thomson
Senior Executive Vice President, Strategic Matters

Kevin Thomson

Kevin Thomson was appointed Senior Executive Vice President, Strategic Matters, in October 2014. He is one of Canada's most distinguished securities lawyers and had worked closely with Barrick's management team and its Board of Directors as a key strategic advisor to the company since 1995.

In this role, he is intimately involved in all activities of strategic significance to the company, including the development of partnerships with investors, suppliers and other business partners, strategic legal issues, management of complex negotiations, as well as development of corporate strategy and governance.

He was previously a senior partner at Davies Ward Phillips & Vineberg LLP, where he advised many of Canada's largest and most successful public companies.

Mr. Thomson earned a Law degree from Queen's University after completing a B.A. with Distinction in History.


Darian Rich
Executive Vice President, Talent Management

Darian Rich

Darian Rich was appointed Executive Vice President, Talent Management, in July 2014, a new position that reflects the critical requirement that any company seeking to be the leader in its field must attract, retain and develop exceptional people. He joined Barrick in 2012 and was most recently Senior Vice President, Human Resources. He has responsibility for all aspects of global Human Resources.

Mr. Rich has more than 25 years of diversified experience in human resources management. He was previously Vice President, Human Resources, for Albemarle Corporation, and held several positions in the U.S. and Asia during his 12 years with The Coca-Cola Company. Prior to that he held senior roles with Magma Copper and General Motors Corporation.

Mr. Rich is a graduate of the Labor and Human Relations program at Ohio State University and earned a Master of Science degree in Administration from Central Michigan University. He holds several professional certifications, including Certified Compensation Professional, Certified Benefit Professional and Global Remuneration Professional from the American Compensation Association.


Catherine Raw
Executive Vice President, Business Performance

Catherine Raw

Catherine Raw joined Barrick on May 1, 2015 as Executive Vice President, Business Performance. Prior to joining Barrick, she was Co-Manager of BlackRock’s flagship mining funds. Ms. Raw’s experience as one of the largest investors in the mining sector gives her an intimate knowledge of the global mining investment universe and an understanding of the fundamental drivers of superior performance in the industry. She spent years leading in-depth analysis and evaluation of every major mining company in the world.

At Barrick, Ms. Raw will work collaboratively with other members of the leadership team to drive greater rigor in financial analysis, planning and performance management across the company. She will also play an important role in strategy development and execution, and will work with Barrick's Investor Relations team to build enduring partnerships with both new and existing owners. Her background, combining a foundation in geology with over a decade of experience in mining investment, brings a unique skill-set and deep insight to Barrick, complementing and enhancing the capabilities of the company’s leadership team.

Prior to joining BlackRock in 2003, Ms. Raw worked with Anglo American Plc in London and Johannesburg, and as a geological field assistant in Sweden. She holds a Master’s degree in Natural Sciences, with Honors, from Downing College, University of Cambridge, and a Master of Science in Mineral Project Appraisal from Imperial College London.


Richard Williams
Chief of Staff

Richard Williams

Richard Williams joined Barrick in October 2014 as Chief of Staff to the company's executive leadership team. In this role, Mr. Williams facilitates and coordinates the activities of the executive leadership team to ensure seamless and efficient decision-making and execution against priority initiatives.

Mr. Williams served for 20 years in the United Kingdom’s Special Air Service (SAS), an elite Special Forces unit of the British Army, retiring as a Commanding Officer in 2008. He also served as Chief of Staff for a multinational brigade in Kosovo, and later served in both Iraq and Afghanistan. After leaving the military, Mr. Williams worked as a risk advisor at U.K.-based hedge fund Lansdowne Partners. He is also the founder and director of a number of mineral exploration and services companies active in Afghanistan, central Asia and Africa.

He holds a Master’s Degree in Defence and Security Studies from King’s College London, an MBA in Defence from Cranfield University and a Bachelor of Science in Economics from University College London.
