Barrick Gold Appoints New Manager, Exploration

July 11, 2007
Experienced geologist Glenn Asch to lead exploration and business development efforts for Canada and Alaska

TORONTO, ONTARIO, Jul 11, 2007 (CCNMatthews via COMTEX News Network) -- Barrick Gold Corporation (TSX:ABX) (NYSE:ABX) has recently appointed Glenn Asch as Manager, Exploration. Based in Barrick's Vancouver office, he will develop and manage the company's exploration programs in Canada and Alaska, and will identify partnership/business development opportunities with the Vancouver-based junior mining sector.

His appointment is evidence of Barrick's on-going commitment to exploration. The company has a specialized team of over 500 dedicated geologists and exploration staff, and a 2007 exploration budget of $170 million. Barrick has always maintained a strong global exploration effort, even during times of lower gold prices, and this has paid off in helping to generate an unrivalled pipeline of projects at various stages of discovery and development.

Mr. Asch is an industry veteran with 24 years of experience in mining, from grassroots exploration to project administration. He has been with Barrick since 2003, most recently as District Geologist at the Cortez Mine in Nevada, where he led the successful transition of the exploration department following Barrick's acquisition of Placer Dome in 2006.

A geology graduate from the University of Nevada and an accomplished field geologist, Mr. Asch has extensive knowledge of precious metal exploration models. He has managed large teams of exploration geologists, and has experience in targeting, reconnaissance, geologic mapping, geotechnical reporting, submittal review and development drill programs. He has participated in detailed reviews of potential acquisition opportunities in North America since 1999, and has been involved in property evaluations or projects in Canada, United States, Latin America and Euroasia. He held progressively responsible roles with companies such as AngloGold, Pikes Peak Mining Company, NERCO Minerals Company, and Freeport Exploration, before moving to Barrick.

He will work closely with Ed Cope who has been promoted to Vice President Exploration for North America, to oversee all exploration activities on the continent. Mr. Cope was previously Vice President Exploration, USA.
