Human Rights Watch Response and Engagement

17 June 2024

PDF

Human Rights Watch (HRW) published an article on 12 June 2024, titled ‘Tanzania: Police Linked to Killings at Gold Mine’. As part of HRW’s preparation, a letter was sent to Barrick on 4 June 2024 asking for responses to four posed questions.

Barrick provided written response on 11 June 2024, within HRW’s requested timeframe. The HRW article was published less than 24 hours after this submission. Barrick is making these engagements publicly available as part of its commitment to transparency. Barrick has also offered a call to HRW to discuss further should they wish to.

The article has focused on the Tanzanian Police Force, allegations against them and, unlike publications from other international NGOs, appropriately made recommendations to the Tanzanian authorities.

However, it is important to note, as per Barrick’s response letter, that some references in the article are inaccurate, notably the reference to a 2014 agreement and the designation of the police to ‘guard the mine’.
