Pueblo Viejo Ranked Among Top Workplaces in Dominican Republic

Moving up five rankings from last year

Mercado magazine is a Dominican business publication distributed nationally.

For the fifth straight year, Pueblo Viejo has been named one of the best companies to work at in the Dominican Republic by Mercado magazine. Mercado, a national magazine covering business issues, ranked Pueblo Viejo 20th out of 80 companies, moving up five rankings from last year.

In its report, Mercado said that it is not enough for a company to have good financial results or high levels of productivity to make it into the top 80, they must also be responsible corporate citizens and good environmental stewards.

“A company that creates, supports and develops its human talent is destined to achieve successful results,” the magazine said in its report. “Barrick Pueblo Viejo reflects this statement. They are committed to local employment, supporting, developing and empowering Dominican talent.”

Pueblo Viejo has had a positive impact on the economic and social development of the Dominican Republic. The mine employs more than 2,000 people, 95 percent of whom are Dominican.

Pueblo Viejo boasts one of the best talent management systems in the industry.

Mercado highlighted the numerous training and development programs provided by Pueblo Viejo. These include a Global Share Plan for employees, a local employment program, a local supplier development program, and the mine’s apprenticeship and internship program. Additionally, “Pueblo Viejo boasts one of the best talent management systems in the industry,” Mercado stated.

Juan Barceló, Executive Director for Barrick in the Dominican Republic, said that the Pueblo Viejo mine attracts and develops exceptional people who inspire others to give the best of themselves. Through Pueblo Viejo’s operations “we want to leave a positive legacy for all of Dominican society,” Barceló said.
